Border possibilities
The possibilities for business and employment expand when cross-border exchange is facilitated. An essential task for the Svinesund Committee is therefore to create meeting places, identify border obstacles, and work towards their resolution.
Norway and Sweden are each other’s most important trading partners. In 2022, the trade in goods between the two coutries amounted to 468 billion SEK. Svinesund is the largest border crossing between Norway and Sweden. 80% of Norwegian imports and just over half of Norwegian exports pass through Svinesund Bridge. Norway’s largest port is the Port of Gothenburg. The business sectors in Norway and Sweden have different strengths and complement each other. There is significant potential for innovation, business collaborations, and more jobs.
A crucial aspect of the work is to influence legislators and authorities to find better solutions for the identified border obstacles. We also ensure that these obstacles are included in the Nordic Border Obstacle Database. Norway is part of the EU’s internal market, but the national border is also an external border to the EU in terms of customs, presenting challenges. Another factor complicating cross-border growth is the implementation of EU legislation, different regulatory frameworks, and the application of directives.
